Awka South is a Local Government Area in Anambra State, South-East Nigeria, established in 1991 when Awka was declared the state capital. Headquartered in Awka town, the LGA is made up of nine towns: Amawbia, Awka, Ezinato, Isiagu, Mbaukwu, Nibo, Nise, Okpuno and Umuawulu.
Historically known as the "Sires of Smiths" (Agba Awka), the people of Awka South are renowned throughout Igboland for their blacksmithing, technical skills and business acumen. Today, the LGA is home to Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), the State House & Governor's Lodge in Amawbia, the WAEC State Head Office in Nise, and major markets including the Eke Market in Nibo.
The main source of income remains farming — yam, maize, cocoyam and cassava are cultivated in large quantities — alongside thriving commerce along Zik Avenue, Works Road and Arthur Eze Avenue. The council, led by Mayor Prince Chinedu Okafor (APGA), is committed to transparent governance and digital service delivery for all residents.
