The administrative and cultural heart of Anambra State — home to the state capital, the legendary blacksmiths of Igboland, and a vibrant community of over 200,000 residents.
Awka South is a Local Government Area in Anambra State, South-East Nigeria. Established in 1991 following the creation of Anambra State, Awka South is headquartered in Awka, the state capital. The LGA comprises 9 major towns: Amawbia, Awka, Ezinato, Isiagu, Mbaukwu, Nibo, Nise, Okpuno, and Umuawulu.
For centuries, Awka has been renowned as the ancient blacksmithing capital of Igboland — the "Sires of Smiths" — whose guilds produced sacred Ofo staffs, farming tools, and ritual objects across the region. Today, Awka South hosts the prestigious Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), the WAEC State Headquarters in Nise, and the Governor's Lodge & State Prisons in Amawbia. The annual Imo-Oka Festival remains the largest cultural celebration in the area.
